Professor Annika Östman Wernerson has served as President of Karolinska Institutet since March 1, 2023, following her previous roles as Dean and Academic Vice President of Education at KI. Dr Östman Wernerson earned her Medical degree at KI in 1991, and in 2016 she was appointed Professor of Kidney and Transplant Science at Karolinska Institutet. Alongside her academic work, she is also a consultant in clinical pathology. Her medical research is centred on patients with chronic kidney disease, with a strong commitment to leveraging advanced molecular biology techniques to enhance diagnostics and treatment for both chronic kidney disease and kidney transplant recipients. Professor Östman Wernerson’s clinical expertise in histopathological diagnosis of tissue samples from children, adults, and transplant patients is vital for patient care and also provides an essential foundation for her research. Additionally, her pedagogical research—rooted in pathology—aims to shed light on how emotionally challenging situations influence student learning.
